experience-centered photography for couples that want a beautifully documented + meaningful wedding day
I fancy myself somewhat of an enthusiast of impossibly dreamy wedding venues in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve had the great fortune and tremendous pleasure of shooting at places like Rocky Hill in the Columbia River Gorge, Easton Broad in downtown Portland, and of course Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast. Those places all rank among my favorites for the same reasons: nature is the star of the show (even when an indoor venue like Easton Broad!), the space is unbelievably gorgeous in ways specific to the PNW, and the setting is dreamy and wild and cozy all at once. It’s hard to explain in words, it’s mostly just a feeling that these kinds of places give.
The Carly, located in Carlton, Oregon, is one of those kinds of places.
I recently had a chance to photograph a styled shoot at The Carly, and from the moment I pulled up I knew this venue would immediately be at the top of my list of favorite wedding locations in Portland, Oregon. I loved it so much that I’m *manifesting* a wedding shoot here in 2027. (If this might be you, please reach out and let’s talk!)
Enough about me, let’s get on to the star of the show: The Carly. Let me tell you all about the grounds, the details, and the reason every Oregon couple should have this venue on their shortlist.

If you’re not yet familiar with this spectacular Willamette Valley wedding venue in the region’s burgeoning wine country, allow me to introduce you. It sits on 21 secluded acres just about 45 minutes outside of Portland, making it an easy trek from the city for a day or a long weekend. The property has two lodging options on site: The Fern Lodge and Hummingbird House. In total, the two homes account for 9 bedrooms, making it a super easy place for the whole wedding party (or out-of-town family members) to stay for the wedding weekend.
But for as beautiful as the two houses are, I promise you’ll want to spend very little time inside given all the amenities and beautiful nature surrounding you. There’s a 2-acre private lake nearby stocked with rainbow trout, numerous wildflower meadows to frolic in, forested trails that are just begging for a hike, a handful of fire pits perfect for nightcaps and marshmallow roasting, a Napping Cabin (!!!) situated out amongst the trees, and a ping pong shed for those looking to flex their competitive side.
I mean, can you even? I’ve been there, and even still, reading all that back makes it seem like a fairytale land.
Gorgeous trees of all shapes, sizes, and shades of green are par for the course in the PNW. All that rain we get means everything is a beautiful shade of green all the time. So I’m no stranger to enchanted forests, cozy backroads with stunning tree canopies, or breathtaking venues that seemingly pop up right in the middle of hundreds of ancient trees. The Carly has all of the above. It’s almost like the trees part and open up just in time to reveal the property, hidden amongst the forest, and bathed in that golden Willamette Valley light.

It’s pretty rare to find a wedding location near Portland, Oregon that gives you both the lush PNW forest vibe and that wine country charm in one place. The Carly gives that in spades. Walking paths that cut through wildflower meadows, Lake Carly with its private fishing dock, the property’s fairytale bridge to Willow Island, the lakeside napping cabin are enough of a draw on their own. Then throw in the venue’s proximity to some of the PNW’s best wineries a short drive away, and it’s hard to find a more perfect wedding location in Portland, Oregon.

I love a good styled shoot. Working with other creatives, building something beautiful together, and working in stunning locations is a pretty excellent combo that’s hard to beat. Every styled shoot I do makes me so grateful to be in community with other creative brains who bring their individual talents together to make something that’s part of a larger collective is so special.
This particular styled shoot really had it all. The venue, of course. But also the moody, vintage-inspired details that fit so well with the backdrop and ambiance of The Carly. Everything really played so well against the venue’s natural backdrop. Like the script alphabet chart that was used as a paper accent, the “Drink & Decide” wine tasting wheel (so on-brand for wine country), the strawberry-illustrated matchboxes, and vintage botanical stationery. The smaller details like the calla lilies, the cream rose, and the silk ribbon details really pulled everything together so well.
The editorial-meets-romantic styling was evident elsewhere in the checkered mosaic tile floor inside (such a cute, unique architectural detail for barn-style venues) and the Betsey Johnson beaded heels. The various levels of aesthetics were layered really nicely, ensuring there wasn’t a need for a ton of extra decoration. The venue itself really pulled its weight, doing much of the work on its own.

Okay, real talk: if you’re hunting for wedding locations near Portland, Oregon, The Carly checks every single box you didn’t know you had. Here’s the quick pitch:
