experience-centered photography for couples that want a beautifully documented + meaningful wedding day
Some sessions just have a feeling to them before they even begin. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when someone is completely, fully themselves in front of the camera — Isumi’s senior photos at Cannon Beach are exactly that. She drove from Eugene for her senior photo session, and the moment she stepped onto the sand, it was clear this one was going to be something special.
There’s a reason I love shooting on the Oregon coast in winter. The summer crowds are long gone, the dunes feel like they belong to you alone, and that low, golden light? It does things to film that no other season can touch. February at Cannon Beach is soft and cinematic and wild all at once, and Isumi was made for every bit of it.

Cannon Beach is one of those locations that photographs beautifully no matter what. The iconic sea stacks rising out of the surf, the wide stretch of sand, the tall amber beach grass swaying in the dunes, it all comes together in a way that feels timeless. But in winter, there’s an added magic to it. The light is lower in the sky, the colors are warm and earthy, and when the sun starts to set, the whole beach turns golden.
For seniors who want senior photos with cozy, winter coastal vibes, Cannon Beach is genuinely unmatched. Whether you want wide dramatic landscapes or something more intimate and tucked into the dunes, this location delivers every single time.
And for Isumi, it was delivered in the most beautiful way.

Isumi came with two looks, and both were absolutely perfect for the setting.
For her first outfit, she wore a cream cable-knit cardigan with gold button details, paired with a soft blue midi skirt. The textures were stunning and that chunky knit against the amber dune grass and the pale winter sky was like something out of a magazine. It was cozy without trying too hard, and the color palette felt so naturally at home on the Oregon coast.
Her second look was a forest green cable-knit turtleneck with dark wide-leg trousers. Earthy, grounded, and just a little moody in the best way. The green pulled out the tones of the dune grass around her perfectly.
Both outfits are such great examples of senior photo outfit ideas for Cannon Beach in the winter months. The key is layering with texture like chunky knits, cozy sweaters, and flowy skirts or wide-leg pants all photograph beautifully in coastal environments. Earthy tones and muted neutrals tend to work really well because they complement the natural landscape rather than compete with it. And if you’re shooting on the coast in February, a cozy layer isn’t just stylish — it’s practical!
We started in the dunes, where the light was already doing something special. Isumi settled right into it – moving through the tall beach grass, laughing into the wind, letting her hair do whatever it wanted. There was this one moment where she tilted her head back into a gust, completely unbothered, and that frame is one of my favorites from the whole day. You cannot plan for that kind of ease. It just happens when someone is genuinely having fun.
We worked our way through the dunes, capturing a mix of wide shots with the sea stacks in the background and closer, more intimate portraits tucked into the grass. The black and white edits from this section are stunning because of the texture of her sweater, the movement of her hair, the way the light fell across her face from the side.
As the afternoon started to wrap up, we made our way down to the shoreline right as the Cannon Beach sunset was beginning to paint the sky. And wow. That evening did not disappoint. The light turned everything gold and pink, the wet sand reflected it back, and Isumi — she just ran. Barefoot down the shoreline, arms loose, totally free. Her silhouette against that sunset is the kind of image that reminds me why I do this work.

I get asked a lot whether it’s worth doing a senior photo session at the coast in winter, and my answer is always yes, for the right person. If you’re someone who loves moody, cinematic, editorial-feeling photos, winter on the Oregon coast is your season. The crowds clear out completely, the light is softer and more flattering, and there’s a quietness to the beach in February that makes the whole experience feel a little more personal.
It’s also worth noting that seniors have been driving for their photoshoot from all over Oregon to shoot at Cannon Beach — and Isumi driving from Eugene for her senior photos is a perfect example of how worth it that trip can be. Sometimes the right location is worth the extra miles.

Isumi, thank you for making the drive from Eugene and for giving me every real, unguarded, joyful moment you had out there on that beach. Watching you run into the waves and laugh into the wind is something I’ll remember for a long time. These are yours and I hope they feel exactly like you.
