Senior year just hits different. One minute you’re a freshman lost in the hallways, the next you’re picking out a graduation cap and wondering where the heck the time went. I photographed a spring senior session last month, and we had so much fun. The twirling-in-the-meadow, and “wait, can we try that one more time?” kind of fun. So today I’m sharing my favorite fun senior picture ideas from this exact shoot, plus a few thoughts on why professional senior pictures are worth every penny.

Why Professional Senior Pictures Are Worth It

Senior year is one of those milestones you’ll want to remember forever. Like, forever ever. Framed-on-your-grandma’s-mantel forever.

Yes, professional senior pictures make great grad announcements. And they also end up on dorm room walls, in your social media rotation, and in front of your future kids, who will think it’s hilarious that you wore that jacket in 2026. And parents: I already know these are the ones that’ll make you tear up at the graduation party. I see you.

Fun Senior Picture Idea #1: Lean Into the Season

Springtime in the PNW is unmatched. Wildflowers popping up everywhere, soft golden light filtering through fresh green leaves, blossoms on every tree in sight. We took full advantage during this shoot, and PDX spring really delivered.

If your session falls in summer, lean into the long days and soft meadow light. If you do your shoot in the fall, you get all the moody, crunchy-leaves vibes you can handle. And, of course, winter means cozy sweaters and dramatic skies. Working with the season instead of fighting it is one of those fun senior picture ideas that quietly makes the biggest difference in your final gallery.

Fun Senior Picture Idea #2: Switch Up Your Outfits

One of my favorite fun senior picture ideas is bringing 2-3 outfits to your session.

I usually recommend one casual look (jeans and your fave top, easy), one a little dressier (sundress, jumpsuit, whatever you feel great in), and one wildcard. The wildcard is where personality lives. Letterman jacket, vintage band tee, dance recital costume, favorite team’s jersey. Whatever screams *you*. And don’t forget the accessories here either: jewelry, hats, sunglasses, shoes that match each look. It’s the little stuff like this that adds up to perfectly you senior photos.

Fun Senior Picture Idea #3: Bring Your Stuff

And by stuff I mean the things that make you, you. Your car, your guitar, and yes, obviously your dog. Soccer ball, paintbrushes, theater script, vintage film camera, the coffee order you grab at the drive-thru every morning before school. These details turn pretty photos into a story about who you were during your senior year of high school. It’s the best sort of time capsule that you’ll be able to look back on forever.

Years from now, you’ll look back and laugh remembering how obsessed you were with your beat-up old Subaru, or that one specific tote bag you carried everywhere. So just trust me on this one: Bring the stuff.

Fun Senior Picture Idea #4: Pick Locations That Mean Something

This one’s my soapbox moment. Stop defaulting to “that park downtown that everyone uses.” While I’m sure it’s beautiful, we can certainly find something a little more unique!

Think about the spots that matter to you. The hiking trail you and your dog walk every weekend. The beach your family’s been visiting since you were three. The field behind your grandma’s house. Downtown Portland, if you’re moving out of state and want a little reminder of home. I love scouting locations with my seniors and finding spots that both look gorgeous and also mean something to you.

Fun Senior Picture Idea #5: Just Have Fun

Cheesy? Maybe. But the best photos in my galleries happen when a senior loosens up and forgets the camera is there. So bring your bestie or your mom for moral support, blast your favorite playlist on the drive over, and remember that I’m here to capture the authentic version of you. The stiff, posed, “say cheese” version of you can stay home.

Laugh when something’s funny. Twirl when you feel like twirling. Tell me about the group chat drama, your college plans, and whatever else is on your mind. The in-between moments always hit hardest in the final gallery.
