experience-centered photography for couples that want a beautifully documented + meaningful wedding day
Golden hour on the Oregon coast is the kind of magic you just have to experience for yourself. And if you haven’t yet had the chance to visit for yourself in real life, these selects from Charlotte and Reid’s dreamy Oregon coast engagement photos might do the trick. The haystack rocks, golden windswept grass, and dramatic coastline is the kind of engagement photo location that’s every photographer’s dream.

As you can probably tell right away when looking through the photos, Charlotte and Reid were a dream to photograph for their engagement shoot. They’re all the things any photographer would want: super go-with-the-flow, great natural chemistry together, easy to “direct” to get a great shot, and super sweet and incredibly genuine. Between the company of this wonderful couple and the gorgeous location as the backdrop, this engagement session was truly a ten out of ten.

Drama makes for compelling art. That’s true whether you’re talking about a movie, a painting, or a picture. And while there might not be any crazy drama in the front-and-center subject of an engagement photo, creating drama in the backdrop and with the landscape is a good way to bring in that added visual dynamic in an authentic way. Thankfully, here in Oregon we’re surrounded by all kinds of natural, dramatic beauty, making it really difficult to not find a gorgeous engagement photo location that can pretty seamlessly add plenty of drama and visual intrigue to any shot.
The engagement photo location for Charlotte and Reid’s session was Ecola State Park, near Portland’s Cannon Beach. The beach’s towering (and almost hauntingly beautiful) seastacks in the water, combined with the stunning coastline and long dune grass, make this specific section of Oregon coastline a sort of bucket list location for many photographers. The area’s perfect blend of drama and romance makes it a dream location for engagement photos.

Beyond the dramatic beauty of this part of the coast, the other benefit it provides is the variety you get from one single location. You can seamlessly move from sea level to a higher vantage point up on the dunes, and have totally different vibes with each location. It makes it easy to achieve a range of visual intrigue across the entire photoset, all without ever having to get in the car.

If you’re a couple or an individual considering this stunning location on the Oregon coast, just know that the wind comes standard. It’s just par for the course with this location, but honestly? It’s part of what makes the pictures so good.
Okay, let’s talk about this session. Because I’m still not over it, to be honest. As you might know, Oregon isn’t necessarily known for perfect, sunny weather. Getting sunshine (and that perfect golden hour glow) anywhere in Oregon, but especially on the coast, can be a real exercise in patience. As a photographer who does her fair share of outdoor shoots, I’ve become very good at reading radars and understanding 7-day weather reports.

But on Charlotte and Reid’s day? It was picture perfect. We had clear skies and a gorgeous golden hour that made for movie-like stills with the perfect, dream-like golden haze. We also got a little bit of that signature Oregon coast haze for some of our beach shots, which added some extra visual drama, and made for the perfect encapsulation of Oregon weather.
Every couple brings their own energy to a session, and Charlotte and Reid’s was this perfect mix of laid-back cool and deeply-in-love romantic. From the first shot, their chemistry was natural and easy. They have the kind of connection that you can’t pose, and that’s certainly not a given with everyone. The way they interacted and made everything feel totally second nature is what makes for the best engagement photos. I think that really came across in their shots.

If I’ve done a good enough job of convincing you that the Oregon coast is the perfect spot for your engagement photo location, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Golden hour is everything. It really can’t be overstated how gorgeous it is when you have that golden light washing over everything it touches. It’s the untouchable element that takes any photo to the next level. Planning your session around the weather to ensure you get some of that glorious golden hour light might be an exercise in patience, but I promise you it’ll be worth it when you see the result. It’s worth planning around (and waiting for), I promise.

Don’t fight the wind, embrace it. I know it seems like the last thing you’d want for photos that you’ll want to frame and keep for a lifetime, but that windswept look is a feature of the location. And windswept hair is always a good look anyways!

Wear shoes (and clothes) you don’t mind getting a little muddy or sandy. As mentioned above, one of the biggest benefits of this location on the Oregon coast is that you can get such a variance in shots and dramatic backgrounds all within a short walk. Take advantage of the variety that this stunning location offers! You won’t regret it.
