I had the pleasure of capturing a stunning beach engagement shoot for a lovely couple in Cannon Beach, Oregon. As they visited their wedding venue in Pacific City, we decided to take advantage of their trip to Oregon by capturing thierengagement photos!

There’s something truly magical about watching the sunset on the beach, especially in Oregon. The colors of the sky blend seamlessly with the crashing waves, creating a picturesque backdrop for any photoshoot. The couple embraced the beach elements, running around having the best time enjoying the rugged coastline.

Oregon offers a plethora of stunning beach towns for engagement photos. Some of my favorites include Cannon Beach, Brookings, Pacific City, and Lincoln City. Each location has its own unique charm and provides a variety of scenic backdrops for capturing beautiful moments.

Tips for a Beach Engagement

Okay so ya wanna have your engagement session at the beach – YAY! I love shooting on the coast, especially out here in the PNW! With the right planning, and help from an expert Oregon beach engagement photographer (hii!) you can have the dreamiest photos by the sea. Here are some tips for planning your beach engagement session!

1. Choose the Right Time: Plan your beach engagement during the golden hour, shortly before sunset or after sunrise, to capture the most beautiful lighting. I always choose timing for my couples to make sure they have the best lighting so this isn’t on you to have to figure out. You can look to me for all timing and lighting knowledge.
2. Dress Comfortably: Opt for light, flowy outfits that complement the beach setting and allow you to move freely. Consider the wind and sand when selecting your attire. Many of my couples love going barefoot once we get on the beach and wearing some sort of boots when we are out in the coastal forests.
3. Embrace the Location: Incorporate beach elements into your engagement photos, go barefoot, dip your toes in the sea – don’t be afraid to get wet! Let your hair be crazy if it wants to be!
4. Be Mindful of Tides: Check the tide schedule beforehand to ensure safety and accessibility. Avoid high tides that can restrict your movement or damage equipment. Always keep an eye on the ocean! The waves can surprise you.
5. Capture Candid Moments: Instead of posing for every shot, embrace candid moments and genuine interactions. Enjoy the beach atmosphere and let your love shine through. Think of your engagement session as a casual date on the beach. You can walk along the beach dreaming about your upcoming wedding day, have a slow dance, and hold hands while watching the sunset. It’s all about enjoying this time celebrating your engagement!

What to wear to your beach engagement

Not sure how to dress? Here are 5 Tips for What to Wear to Your Beach Engagement:

1. Choose Light Fabrics: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool and comfortable in the beach environment. But don’t be afraid to get cozy with sweaters n beanies when it’s colder!
2. Go for Neutral Colors: Soft earthy colors like rust, tan, green, and cream can complement the beach backdrop and create a romantic atmosphere but don’t afraid to add in some dark bold color to contrast the sandy environment (like black or deep chocolate.)
3. Wear Flowy Dresses: Flowy maxi dresses or skirts can create a dreamy and ethereal look, especially when they catch the ocean breeze. Be careful with short dresses, because when it’s windy, that is a recipe for disaster.
4. Dress in Layers: Beach weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Consider bringing a lightweight cardigan or wrap for cooler moments. I’ll have some hand warmers in my car for you in case it’s too chilly!
5. Don’t Forget the Footwear: Opt for comfortable and practical footwear for the forests, like hiking boots or nike af1’s that you can walk on a potentially muddy trail with – you can also go barefoot when you get onto the beach!
