Should you Do Your Senior Photos in the Fall?

A question I get asked a lot is: “when is the best time to take senior photos?” I usually recommend booking your photoshoot for the Summer before your last semester, or better yet in the gorgeous Autumn months! Here’s a few reasons why you should book a Fall Senior Session:

1. The weather a little more predictable than in the Winter/Spring. Good weather is never promised, but once you get into late october & november, its starts to be pretty likely that it’ll be raining. Go for September & early October for best chance at good weather!
2. The landscape is gorgeous! Okay let’s be real, it always is in the PNW. But when the fields are that dreamy golden color, and the trees start to turn different hues: golden hour just hits different!
3. More access to locations. While some of the more popular areas may still get traffic, there’s plenty of spots that won’t be as crowded as during the Summer months. With the mild weather there are so many trails/parks/roads that are open to use around Oregon
4. No last minute stress. You want to enjoy your Senior year of high school without the last minute realization that you forgot to book a session! Better to get your photos done early on so you’re not rushing to get it over with. Most yearbook photos are due sometime between November 1st & February so check with your school to make sure you plan your shoot 1-2 months before your yearbook photo is due.
5. The COLORS!! Not just talking about the Fall foliage here. But outfit colors! Autumn tones are so dreamy to photograph. From beige, amber, rust, orange, green, brown; neautral warm tone colors THRIVE in Fall photoshoot! check out the next section for what to wear for your Fall Photoshoot!

What to Wear to Fall Photoshoot – for Seniors

This is the really fun part!! You’ve decided to get your fall senior photos done (YAY) Now to dream up the perfect outfit! All of my senior sessions include 2 outfit changes (3 in the adventure session!) So you can bring a couple different options and decide once you get to the location. I’m always happy to give any input on what would photograph well too! I love seeing each clients unique style come out at their session, but if you’re having trouble getting started here’s some ideas on what to wear:

Neutral/Earthy Tones. Think about the environment and the season. Imagine the colors of the landscape and how it makes you feel. PNW colors that always work: forest green, sandy beige, cloudy white, rusty amber, coal-black, earthy brown, etc.

Texture/Patterns. Combing different fabrics adds a fun element to photographs! Choosing between soft and flowing like a silk dress, or rougher like a denim jacket. Cable knit sweaters and boyfriend jeans, a wind-swept dress and pair of trendy sneakers; you can dress up or down your outfit exactly how you like!

Okay so we’ve touched on why a fall senior session is a great idea, and tips on what to wear. But you might be wondering WHERE do we take these epic senior photos?
