experience-centered photography for couples that want a beautifully documented + meaningful wedding day
Not every wedding needs a grand ballroom or sweeping guest list to feel meaningful. Sierra and David’s micro wedding at Hoyt Arboretum was proof that a small gathering in the right place—with the right people—can be just as grand.Tucked inside Portland’s west hills, the Redwood Deck at Hoyt Arboretum makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Towering trees, filtered light, and the tranquil hush of the forest created the perfect backdrop for Sierra and David to exchange vows in a way that felt totally them.
People often ask me what the difference is between an elopement and a micro wedding, and I always say it comes down to who’s there. Elopements are usually just the couple or maybe a witness or two. Micro weddings, on the other hand, are intimate celebrations with a small guest list, usually under 30 people.
Sierra and David wanted their day to be personal and low-stress, but they also wanted their closest people by their side. Their Hoyt Arboretum wedding was the perfect mix: quiet and romantic, but still shared with those who matter most.
Hoyt Arboretum is one of Portland’s best hidden gems. Locals know it well, but if you didn’t grow up nearby or haven’t explored the city’s green spaces, you might miss it altogether… which honestly makes it feel even more exclusive and special.
The Redwood Deck is the standout spot for weddings here. Once you step onto the platform, you’re completely surrounded by towering redwood trees that stretch to the sky in every direction. It feels a little surreal—like a woodland cathedral. The filtered light and quiet stillness set the tone for a ceremony that’s calm, intimate, and beautifully rooted in nature.
And speaking of light… I have to take a moment to talk about the dress. Sierra’s off-the-shoulder lace gown featured dramatic tulle puff sleeves, delicate floral embroidery, and just the right amount of shimmer to catch the sunlight peeking through the trees—elegant, whimsical, and totally fitting for the forest setting.
After the ceremony, we wandered through the nearby trails for photos. The winding paths and lush greenery made every frame feel like a fairytale. Once portraits were wrapped, it was time to celebrate.
One of the things I love about a Hoyt Arboretum wedding is that you can keep everything in one location. There’s a small covered area not far from the Redwood Deck that works well for an intimate post-ceremony meal or champagne toast. It’s simple, charming, and keeps your celebration feeling connected to the natural surroundings.
While the Arboretum is absolutely worth it, there are a few logistics you’ll want to keep in mind, especially if you’re bringing guests.
Sierra and David’s Hoyt Arboretum wedding was one of those days that just felt right. From their emotional ceremony in the redwoods to their private dance in the ceremony space at the end of the day, everything was simple, meaningful, and totally them. You could tell how much thought went into the little things—from their handwritten vows to choosing a location that felt like home.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels connected to nature, full of meaning, and surrounded by people you love (but not too too many people), this might just be your perfect spot.
