Trading in the PNW moody vibes today with a desert engagement shoot in Joshua Tree National Park! So fun to make it down south for Laura and Michaels boho desert adventure session in November. When talking with them about what they want to remember about their relationship in 20 years they said they want to remember how much FUN they have together, and I think we captured just that! So, if you’re wondering about how to have an awesome engagement session, here’s a few pointers to get you started!
Choosing the location for your engagement session can be a daunting task, but when you approach it with the mindset of adventure, the options are limitless! You can go somewhere local or sentimental to you two (like the place you had your first date, or your favorite hiking trail!) Or you can go somewhere new to both of you and explore together. This is something you can brainstorm with your photographer with, I myself have a huge list of bucket list locations of old favorites that I’m always happy to show my clients to! Making the engagement session an extended adventure is always a good idea (weekend date in a National Park?? YES PLEASE!)
I get lots of questions on what to wear to an engagement session, so if you’re stressing about this you’re not alone! I recommend choosing a color palette that goes well with the environment. Neutral colors always do well (think earthy, muted, not overly saturated primary colors) Fabrics that are light and have good movement or texture are great to wear! Like Laura’s gorgeous silk shirt – I love the way the light catches it and how it so delicately flows. Bringing a couple options to change between is a great idea, and I can help you decide on what looks best! Most importantly, wear something that YOU feel amazing and comfortable in, because THAT is what we want! You can always check out some engagement session outfit inspo on my Pinterest!
Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to book an engagement session immediately after getting that ring! Some couples wait until they’ve chosen their wedding date, resized the ring, or had time to really dream up the perfect session in a different season. If you’re planning for a short engagement and hope to use your photos for “save the dates” or wedding invites, then you’ll want to book a shoot ASAP! Some photographers offer special deals on engagement sessions if you book your wedding/elopement with them as well (LIKE ME!) So don’t jump too quickly and hire the first photographer you find! Do your research and find a photographer whose work you LOVE. This season is so special and will go by so fast, you want someone to capture your love story authentically for you two!
